William T. Powers

William T. Powers, Jr., 86, of 21 Lennon Street, Gardner, died peacefully Thursday, November 8th, in his residence surrounded by his family.

He was born in Gardner on November 22, 1920, the son of the late William T. and Amanda (Mailloux) Powers, Sr.

Mr. Powers was employed by the City of Gardner as a Crossing Guard from 1982 thru 2002. Prior to retiring in 1982, he was a welder for 13 years employed by C & W Fabricators of Gardner.

William was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church. He was a member of the Gardner Museum, the Gardner Rabbit Club, the Gardner Golden Agers, the Gardner Chapter of the A.A.R.P., and also the V.F.W. Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner.

Mr. Powers was a WWII United States Navy Veteran, and received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon.

He enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, woodworking, playing bingo and cards. William was an loyal New England Patriots fan and an avid woodsman. He most enjoyed spending time with his family, which he deeply loved.

Mr. Powers leaves his wife of 67 years, Helen Claire (Gay) Powers of Gardner; one daughter, Lynn L. Powers-Trainque and her husband Arthur of Hubbardston; one brother, Francis (Bucky) Powers of Ashburnham; two sisters, Lorraine Charland and Rita Niall both of Gardner; one granddaughter, Sheryl DeGrace; four great-granddaughters, Mellisa, Amanda, Theresa, and Lillian Harkins; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas A. Powers, who died in 1968 during non-combat related incident in the Vietnam Crisis.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 15th at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church Fund, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner, MA 01440 or to the Gardner Visiting Nursing Association, Hospice Program, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440.
