William L. Fontaine, 80, of The Soldiers Home, Holyoke, and formerly of 57 Reservoir St., and 59 Champagne Road, both in Gardner, died Monday, May 3rd in Holyoke, following a short illness.
Born in Gardner on August 20, 1929, he was the son of Amos and Felia (Pellerin) Fontaine.
Bill was an inspector employed by the former Simplex Time Recorder Company of Gardner for 33 years until retiring in 1992.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner.
Mr. Fontaine was a member V.F.W. of Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner for 58 years during which time he served as Post-Commander twice from 1994 to 1995 and 1995 to 1996. Prior to being Commander, he served as Post Jr. Vice Commander, Senior Vice Commander and Surgeon. He also was Captain of the Honor Guard from 1988 until 2002 and was an Honor guard member for more than 20 years. He was a member of "The Chosin Few" Korean War Veterans Organization.
Bill was a trumpet player with the Simplex Marching Band and also played the organ. He was a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics. He belonged to the "Two Hearts As One" Square Dance Club. Mr. Fontaine was a pool player, horseshoe player and an avid bowler. He loved his immediate and extended family very much. He also loved all of his pets, especially his dog, Goldie.
He was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran and received the Army Occupational Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal with 5 Camp Stars, the ROK Presidential Unit Citation CO, the Merit Unit Comm Co. 578 EUSAK, and the United Nations Service Medal.
Bill's first wife, Beverly C. (Currie) Fontaine, died in 1993 and his second wife, G. Isabelle (Allain) (Poulin) Fontaine died in 2000.
He leaves one daughter, Linda A. Fontaine and her husband Paul Olszewski of South Deerfield; one son, William L. Fontaine Jr. and his partner, Michael R. Lefebvre of Uxbridge, two brothers, Aime Fontaine and his wife Claire of Vienna, VA, Edmond Fontaine and his wife Lois of Fitchburg; three sisters, Shirley Miller and her husband Thomas of Manassas, VA, Nancy Smola and her husband Stanley of Rutland, Elaine Munzner and her husband Robert of Rutland; one grandchild, Nicholas T. W. Olszewski of South Deerfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves Isabelle's extended family.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 7th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St., Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday, May 6th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
