Walter T. "Grumpy" McCarthy, 77, of 23 Chapman Park, Gardner, died peacefully Tuesday, December 16th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, surrounded by his family.
Born in Somerville, MA on May 20, 1931, he was the son of the late Timothy and Nora (Driscoll) McCarthy.
Prior to retiring in 1993, Walter was a laborer, employed by Henry-Owens, Inc., of Cambridge for 25 years.
Walter graduated from St. Joseph's High School, Somerville, with the Class of 1947.
He enjoyed carpentry, tree cutting and boxing. Walter was an avid fan of both the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox.
He leaves his wife of 37 years, Evelyn Lynn (Bard) McCarthy of Gardner; five sons, David J. McCarthy and his wife Lavender of San Pedro, CA, Steven P. McCarthy and his wife Crystal of Cambridge, MA, Walter T. McCarthy of Cambridge, John F. McCarthy, Jr. of Brattleboro, VT and William McCarthy of Miami, FL; three daughters, Janice M. Kapp and her husband Carl of Lunenburg, Kerri L. McCarthy and her companion Shawn Williams of East Boston, Anne M. Rowe and husband William of Tewksbury; seven grandchildren, Shannon and Richard Rowe, Jenna, Joseph and Nicholas Kapp, Jared and Jacoby McCarthy; two sisters-in-law, Mary McCarthy of Arlington and Bernice McCarthy of Somerville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Francis McCarthy and Arthur McCarthy, and by two sisters, Mary Spartichino and Eleanor Gould.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m. in the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner. Rev. Andre Dargis of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Greenlawn Cemetery, Baldwinville.
A calling hour in the funeral home will be Saturday, December 20th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
