Waino I. Parviainen, 87, of 99 Bridge Street, Baldwinville died peacefully Saturday, December 8th in the Leo P. LaChance Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing following a short illness.
He was born in South Ashburnham on November 25, 1920, the son of the late Emil and Tekla (Salmi) Parviainen.
Waino was employed as a paper maker for Seaman Paper Co. of Massachusetts, in Otter River for 28 years, retiring in 1983.
He graduated from Fitchburg High School with the class of 1938.
Waino was a member of the V.F.W. Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner, a lifetime member of the Otter River Sportsman Club, and a member of the Gardner Chapter of A.A.R.P. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Lt. Roger P. Warfield Templeton Post 373, where he was commander for over 9 years. He was very involved in many aspects of the Legion, primarily providing the manpower for military funerals for the post members. Waino was also active in the Boys State program- a weeklong session at a Bay State college with the purpose of promoting patriotism in area youth. He also assisted with the Boy Scout troop in South Ashburnham. Waino and his family hosted Fresh Air Fund children from New York for several years.
Waino was a WWII United States Army Air Force veteran, serving for 5 years. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Service Star and the Victory Medal.
He formerly enjoyed hunting, and for many years fishing in Vermont during the wintertime.
Waino leaves his wife, whom he married Labor Day 58 years ago, Doris A. (Casey) Parkiainen of Gardner; three sons, Wayne S. Parviainen and his wife Deborah of Los Angels, CA, Fredrick E. Parviainen and his wife Susan of Baldwinville and John E. Parviainen and his wife Michelle of Los Angeles, CA; one daughter, Gail Lamore and her husband William of Baldwinville; eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a daughter, Donna Marie Roberts who died November 16, 1981; and by two brothers, Wilho and Eino Parviainen.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 13th at 2:00 pm in the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Baldwinville.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be Thursday, December 13th from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
