Vivien Ida (Sawyer) Maffeo, 96, of 116 Church St., Gardner, died peacefully Saturday, June 30th, in the Baldwinville Nursing Home, Baldwinville, following a short illness surrounded by her family.
Born on February 11, 1911, she was the daughter of Frank and Jesse (Duncan) Sawyer.
She was a Licensed Practical Nurse employed by Robert Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, for 30 years until retiring in 1973.
She was a Gardner High School graduate and received her degree in nursing from the Robert Bent Brigham Hospital School of Nursing in 1945.
Mrs. Maffeo was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church and was a member of A.A.R.P. She enjoyed bingo, playing cards, cooking, gardening, reading, and especially loved the beach. She was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
Her husband of 14 years, James M. Maffeo, died in 1943.
She leaves a daughter, Mooneen M. Corley of Gardner; a sister-in-law, Marian Craig of Vienna, VA; 2 granddaughters, Desiree Dion-Fix and her husband Douglas of Palmyra, NY, Jessica Corley and her lifetime companion Rhonda Manthei of Albuquerque, NM; 3 great-grandchildren, Adam Manthei, Emily Corley both of Albuquerque, NM, Gregory Fix of Palmyra, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, George Sawyer and a sister, Geraldine Gaidanowicz.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 3rd from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St., Gardner. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Fitchburg.
A calling hour at the funeral home will be Tuesday, July 3rd from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
