Van M. Hursey, Jr., 67, of Gardner, died peacefully Tuesday, February 23, 2016 in his home surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness.
Born in Gardner on July 11, 1948, he was the son of the late Van M. Hursey, Sr. and Evelyn (Borey) (Hursey) Bastarache.
Van attended Narragansett Regional High School in Templeton.
He was a United States Vietnam War Army Veteran and the proud recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. In addition, he received the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Sharpshooter Badge.
Van was a member of Annunciation Parish/Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church of Gardner, and was a member of Ovila Case, VFW Post 905 of Gardner.
He was employed as a Foreman by Hollingsworth & Vose Company of Groton for several years, retiring in 2001.
Van loved playing all kinds of music on the organ, closely following news and politics on CNN, and being outdoors caring for his yard. He treasured spending time with his family and grandchildren, and loved creating family events for all to gather.
He leaves his wife of 40 years, Shirley A. (Huddleston) Hursey of Gardner; two sons, Van M. Hursey III of Gardner and Derek A. Hursey and his wife Erica of Bedford; two daughters, Kathy A. Hursey of Gardner and Kerry A. Kipp and her husband Michael of Westminster; two brothers, Thomas Hursey and his wife Joanne of Gardner and Gary Hursey of Gardner; seven grandchildren, Brandon and Brianna Hursey, Brian Bruso, Justin and Jonathan Kipp, Alexis and Victoria Hursey; one great-grandchild, Kayleigh Hursey; his step-father, Gerard Bastarache of Gardner; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, Raymond Hursey who died in 2002; and sister, Nancy Guevin.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 27th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 12:30 p.m. in Annunciation Parish/Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours will be held Friday, February 26th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
