Valeria A. "Val" (Bacewski) Maattala, 88, of 45 Greenwood Place, Gardner, died peacefully Tuesday, August 3rd in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, Gardner, following a long illness, surrounded by her family.
Born in Otter River on May 29, 1922, she was the daughter of Stanislaw and Anna (Baldyga) Bacewski.
Mrs. Maattala was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
She spent a lot of her time making crafts, cooking and gardening. She liked playing bingo, traveling to Foxwoods and Atlantic City. She enjoyed watching television, especially Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, The Price is Right and the former Lawrence Welk Show.
Her husband of 42 years, Edwin F. Maattala, died in 1985.
She leaves a son, James E. Maattala, a daughter, Penelope A. Maattala, both of Gardner; a brother, Henry Baczewski and his wife Margaret of Baldwinville, a sister Patricia Fougere and her husband Roger of Templeton; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Baczewski of Gardner; a brother-in-law, Bernard Gronowicz of St. Petersburg, FL; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother Mickey Baczewski and two sisters, Bernadette Gronowicz and Stella Yackowski.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 7th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 166 Cross St., Gardner. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday, August 6th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
