Stella Elia (Croteau) Korale, 91, of 106 Calvin Court North, Town of Tonawanda, NY, and also of Honolulu, Hawaii, died peacefully Wednesday, February 25th in Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Born in Worcester, MA on December 15, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Lucien and Aurore (Couture) Croteau.
Stella graduated from Gardner High School, Gardner, with the Class of 1935. She received her Nursing Degree from Henry Heywood Hospital School of Nursing, Gardner in 1941.
Prior to retiring, Stella was a Registered Nurse, employed by Buffalo General Hospital and the VA Hospital, both in Buffalo, NY. She was a WWII United States Army Veteran, serving in the Army Nurse Corps from 1943 through 1946. She received the European Campaign Medal for her service in England, France and Germany.
Stella was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner.
Stella loved to travel, and stated many times she had a "wandering foot." She traveled to Russia, Poland, Bahamas, Scandinavia, China and Mexico. Stella visited all the National Parks and visited her son and family in Iceland. She moved to Hawaii in June of 2008, to live with her son and his family. In January, they took a cruise around all the Hawaiian Islands. Stella was also an avid reader. She truly loved and appreciated her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Stella was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Michael J. Korale, who died in November of 1988.
She leaves one son, CAPT. Michael E. Korale and his wife Joan of Honolulu, Hawaii; two granddaughters, Carolyn Diana Korale and Kate Michele Korale; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Stella was predeceased by a son, Arthur S. Korale who died in 1964, at the age of 8 years old.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 7th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 11:00 am in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, at a later date.
Calling hours in the funeral home are Saturday, March 7th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
