Sandra Louise Bergstrom Walter, age 71, died peacefully Thursday, January 23, 2014 surrounded by loving family and friends. She had been living previously in Greensboro, North Carolina, and came home to Gardner to be taken care of by loved ones during her brief and courageous battle with lung cancer.
Born in Gardner on December 28, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Edward O. and Hendryka (Chojnowski) Bergstrom. She was the granddaughter of the late Victor J. and Helen Chojnowski.
Sandra graduated from Gardner High School in 1961, and attended Stevens Business School of Worcester. She lived for many years in Northampton, Mass and also in Greensboro, North Carolina. Sandra enjoyed dancing, cooking, reading and watching television, especially NCIS and Criminal Minds. She loved spending time with her family and friends, and sharing coffee, coffee ice cream and chocolate cake with all. The outpouring of love and comfort during her illness kept her going for quite a while.
Her children and grandchildren were the joy of her life. She leaves her daughter Wendy Dahlberg and her husband Eric, and her daughter Kimberly Smothers, of Gardner. She also leaves two sons: Scott Walter of The Woodlands, Texas and Todd Walter of Winchester, Virginia. Sandra leaves two sisters: Patricia Bergstrom, with whom she made her home in Gardner, and Debra Bergstrom of Bethesda, Maryland. She leaves six grandchildren: Meghan and Rebecca Autumn McFarland, Victoria and Nicholas Smothers, and Sybrina and Jessica Walter. She leaves her aunt Wanda Kodys of Westminster, and three nieces: Sherri Bergstrom Brooks, Carol Caruso and Lauren Murphy.
Sandra was blessed with many lifelong friends especially Judy King. Judy, along with Sherri and Rebecca Autumn, were Sandra's primary caregivers.
According to her wishes, her body has been donated to UMASS Memorial Medical School, Worcester. It was her hope that her donation will help to improve someone else's life.
A Memorial Mass with be held Monday, January 27th at 11:00 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 358 Pleasant Street, Gardner.
There are no calling hours.
