Romeo N. "Lefty" Duteau, 91, of 119 Allen St., Gardner, and also of Port Orange, FL, died Sunday, August 20th in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, surrounded by his family, following a short illness.
Born in Gardner on October 18, 1914, he was the son of Romeo and Eva (Barthel) Duteau, Sr.
He was a postal worker for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years, retiring in 1974. He was formerly employed by Heywood Wakefield Co., Gardner.
Romeo was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 905 Ovila Case of Gardner, and a former member of the Acadien Social Club. He organized and was a member of "Gardner Day" in Daytona, FL since 1986. He was a member of "Two Hearts as One" square dancing club for 29 years, and square danced for President Carters' Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C. Romeo enjoyed playing cards, bowling and golfing.
He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, he received the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Service Ribbon.
He leaves is wife of 63 years, Florence (Goguen) Duteau; three sons, Ernest R. Duteau and his wife Kathy of Gardner and Daytona Beach, FL, Robert K. Duteau and his fiancee Carin Allen of Townsend, Norman R. Duteau of Gardner; a daughter Rachel E. Mortimer of Daytona Florida; a brother Ronald Duteau and his wife Marilyn of Port Orange, Florida; three grandchildren, Lisa Comeau, Becky Johnson and Amy Duteau; four great-grandchildren, Christian and Alyson Comeau, and Noah and Alby Johnson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother Raymond Douteau and four sisters; Judy Jodaitis, Doris Parker, Rita Girouard and Theresa Wickberg.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 25th from the Boucher Funeral Home, 110 Nichols St., Gardner with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St., Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday, August 24th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
