Roland A. "PeeWee" Ducharme, 84, of 121 Waterford St., Gardner, where he has lived for the past 49 years, died Friday, February 3rd in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, Gardner following a long illness, surrounded by his family.
Born in Gardner on October 18, 1927, he was the son of Albert and Lena (Fontaine) Ducharme.
Roland was a Charge Attendant employed at the Gardner, Rutland, and Worcester State Hospitals for 20 years until retiring in 1989. He was previously employed by the Florence Stove Co., Heywood-Wakefield Company, both of Gardner and Raytheon Co.
PeeWee was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church. He was a member of the V.F.W. Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner, Acadien Social Club, National Association of A.A.R.P. and the Gardner Golden Agers. He enjoyed traveling, working around the house, watching baseball, fishing, card playing, especially cribbage, and spending time with his family. His greatest passion was researching and studying family geneology on his family and also his wife's family.
He was a World War II U.S. Navy Veteran. He served on the NTS, Sampson, NY, USS St. MARY, and the USS HELENA. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with 2 stars, Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal with one star.
He leaves his wife of 57 years, Theresa P. (Girouard) Ducharme of Gardner; one son, George R. Ducharme and his wife Kerrianne of Taunton; one daughter, Marisa A. Coviello and her husband David of Hubbardston; one sister, Theresa Pratt and her husband Robert of Yuma, AZ; 4 grandchildren, Isabel and Eric Coviello, Kyle and Ryan Ducharme; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond and Normand Ducharme and one sister, Anita Ambroze.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 8th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St., Gardner. Burial will be in the Massachusett Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Tuesday, February 7th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
