Roger Edward LaPlante, 72, of 66 Hyde Park Drive, Winchendon formerly of Gardner and Montreal Quebec Canada died Wednesday, November 2, 2011 in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, following a long battle with cancer.
Born in Queens, NY on October 8, 1939, he was the son of the late Arthur and Marianna (Ouellette) LaPlante. Roger spent most of his childhood in Saco, Maine.
He received his GED in 1965 and later attended Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner.
He was a Certified Nursing Assistant employed by the Baldwinville Nursing Home, Baldwinville and Heywood Hospital in Gardner. He was previously employed by Goodnow Pearson and in the Camera Department of The Gardner News.
Roger was a United States Vietnam War Army Veteran and received the The National Defense Service Medal, The Good Conduct Medal and the Marksman Medal. During his six years of service he was stationed in W. Germany and Massachusetts.
Roger's greatest accomplishments were his paintings. He was a self-taught artist of watercolor, and many of his paintings were sold to private collectors in Canada, the United States, Germany and France. Roger assisted in the founding of the Greater Gardner Artist Association in 1989, and held the position of either President or Vice President throughout the years. His art has been on display in many local locations, including Mount Wachusett Community College, the Gardner Heritage Visitors Center and the Gardner Public Library. He has been awarded with ribbons, certificates and much publicity for his talent.
Roger also had a passion for photography, gardening, reading, music and theatre. He enjoyed walking, skiing and traveling. His family was very important, he loved them dearly and enjoyed spending time with them.
Roger leaves one brother, Peter A. LaPlante of Lee, Maine; five sisters, Teresa E. LeBlanc of Orange, Elizabeth A. Sherwood of Petersham, Barbara J. Nelson of Baldwinville, Linda D. Haskins of Fitzwilliam, NH and Lana M. Montbreand of Winchendon; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, November 13th at 2:00 p.m. in the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner, MA.
A calling hour in the funeral home will be Sunday, November 13th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
