Robert L. Tagen, 88, of Westminster, MA, a Boston newspaper reporter and an advertising sales representative for several national publications for over 25 years, died Wednesday, September 1st in Heywood Hospital, Gardner.
Mr. Tagen was born in Boston, MA on July 30, 1922, the son of the late Joseph J. and Marion (Schaffner) Tagen.
Mr. Tagen graduated from Braintree High School with the Class of 1940. He later graduated from Northeastern University, WPI and Boston University.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps WWII Veteran, in which he served as a decorated bomber pilot, making over 60 combat missions in a B-25 Mitchell bomber in the South Pacific. He also served as safety officer and trained other pilots on how to successfully crash land the B-25 on water.
Mr. Tagen was a reporter for the Worcester Telegram and served nine years with The Associated Press in Concord, NH and Boston. He later became owner/operator of Tagen & Associates, and sold advertising space for several national industrial publications, including McGraw-Hill and Cahners Publishing Co. Mr. Tagen was also an advertising manager and public relations consultant for several national companies.
Mr. Tagen was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Gardner. He was a 53 year member of the Masons.
In recent days, Mr. Tagen was very active in shooting sports, competing for some 25 years with the Worcester County Pistol League, the U.S. Revolver Association and the Gardner Rifle and Pistol Club. Bowling pin and national postal air pistol competitions were his all-time favorites. Mr. Tagen was also an accomplished musician, playing the trumpet in high school, college, while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and weekends in jazz clubs. In addition, Mr. Tagen was also dedicated to his almost daily workouts at Global Fitness Center in Leominster.
Mr. Tagen leaves his wife of 38 years, M. Leonne (Couture) Tagen of Westminster; one son, Jeffrey A. Tagen of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; one daughter, April S. Adams and her husband Anthony of Nashua, NH; one sister, Anne Henderson of Canton, CT; two nieces, and one nephew. He was predeceased by a son, Robert M. Tagen, who died in 2007.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, September 10th at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 79 Cross Street, Gardner. Burial will be in MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon.
