Robert A. Roy, 65, of 13 Iriquois Drive, Ashburnham, died peacefully Thursday, November 20th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, with his family by his side.
Born in Gardner on October 1, 1943, he was the son of the late Ernest R. and Stella (Robichaud) Roy.
Prior to retiring in 1996, Robert was employed by Digital Equipment Corporation of Marlboro, MA for 23 years, as a principle quality and reliability engineer.
He was a 1961 graduate of Gardner High School, Gardner. He graduated from Mount Wachusett Community College, Gardner in 1970 with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. Robert attended Lowell State College and Fitchburg State College.
Robert was a United States Vietnam War Navy Veteran, serving from 1961 through 1968 as a Hospital Corpsman. In 1963, he was assigned to the Fleet Marine Force, and with the Marine Corps he served as a Company Line Corpsman. He later served as an Air Crewman, flying helicopter medical evacuations. Robert had tours of duty in Vietnam in 1965, 1966 and 1967. In 1966-1967 he was a Senior Corpsman of Marine Helicopter Squadron 362, also known as the "Ugly Angels". Robert flew over 160 medical evacuation missions before being medically discharged after becoming wounded. Robert received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with FMF Combat Insignia, 1st Award for Good Conduct Medal for period ending August 16, 1965, Air Medal with Gold Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, and the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in Vietnam.
Robert was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 30 of Fitchburg. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Shirley.
He leaves his wife of 8 years, Shirley A. (Mitchell) Roy of Ashburnham; two sons, Timothy R. Roy and his wife Danielle of W. Hartford, CT and Thomas P. Roy and his wife Leanne of Ashburnham; one daughter, Stephanie A. Roy of Fitchburg; two step-sons, Andrew Hawthorne and his wife Katherine of Aurora, CO and Patrick Hawthorne and his wife Jodi of Lowell, MA; one brother, Raymond L. Roy and his wife Nadege of Gardner; four grandchildren, Oliver, Owen and Addison Roy and Caitlyn Hawthorne; two uncles, Edmond Roy and his wife Edith of Orange, Jean Roy and his wife Priscilla of Gardner: one aunt, Theresa Kullmann and her husband Kenneth of Fitchburg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
All services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family in the MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon, MA.
