Robert E. Melanson, 88, of 125 Connors Street, Gardner, died Friday, February 16th in the Leo P. LaChance Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, following a short illness.
He was born in Rumford, Maine on April 17, 1918, the son of the late Henry and Helen (Babineau) Melanson.
Robert was a lathe operator, employed by S. Bent Company of Gardner for 26 years, until retiring in 1983. He was previously employed by Pratt-Whitney in Connecticut.
Robert was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church and was a member of the V.F.W. Ovila Case Post 905 in Gardner.
He was a WWII United States Army Veteran, and received the Good Conduct Medal, EAME Theatre Campaign Ribbon and the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon.
Robert was an avid card player, and enjoyed playing cribbage and golf.
He leaves his wife of 29 years, C. Aldora (Collette) Melanson of Gardner; two sons, Mark Melanson of Eureka, CA and David Melanson of Seattle, WA; a daughter, Linda Melanson of Georgia; a step-son, Stephen Gormley and his wife Elda of Lancaster, MA; three sisters, Lena Minns, Alma Jaillet and Germaine Melanson all of Gardner; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Robert was predeceased by two brothers Theodore Melanson and Maurice Melanson and two sisters Bertha Boucher and Claire Nolin.
According to his wishes, Roberts body has been donated to science.
A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, February 20th at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon at a later date.
