Robert E. "Babs" Babineau, 79, of 102 Leamy Street, Gardner, died unexpectedly Saturday, April 26th in his residence.
Born in Gardner on October 19, 1928, he was the son of the late Henry and Irene (Demarais) Babineau.
Bob was a Police Officer in the City of Gardner for forty years until retiring on September 29, 1989. He was appointed a Reserve Police Officer on February 2, 1959, and a Regular Full-Time Officer on October 19, 1959. He was a Provisional Sergeant from September 14, 1977 until March 2, 1978. Bob graduated from the State Police Academy on November 7, 1960. He was assigned to the Detective Bureau in the 1970's until his retirement. Robert served as an inspiration to his fellow officers, and was a constant resource in the Detective Bureau. He was the recipient of many commendations and will be greatly missed by the Gardner Police Community.
Mr. Babineau received his GED in 1952.
Robert was a member of Holy Cross Church, East Templeton. He was a member of the American Legion, Ovila Case, Post 129 of Gardner, and the Otter River Sportsman Club, Templeton.
Mr. Babineau was a United States Navy Veteran and served from 1948 to 1950.
Bob enjoyed playing the guitar, hunting, fishing and was an all around sportsman. He was a "family man" who most enjoyed time spent with his family.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Irene M. (Bourgeois) Babineau of Gardner; one son, Ronald E. Babineau of Gardner; one daughter, Elaine D. Carpenter and her husband Edward of Leicester; one sister, Claudette Gallant and her husband Roland "Peton" of Gardner; five grandchildren, Danielle, Jana and Joshua Babineau, Cynthia Robichaud and Steven Robichaud, Jr.; four great-grandchildren, Madison Babineau, Alannis Kimball, Steven Robichaud III and Kelsey Robichaud; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Kenneth R. Babineau who died in 1991.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 30th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Lake Avenue, E. Templeton. Burial will take place at a later date in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours in the funeral home are Tuesday, April 29th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
