Rita Louise (Hamel) Moriarty, 83, of 19 City Hall Ave., Gardner, died Saturday, July 2nd in Leo P. LaChance Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing, Gardner, following an illness.
Born in Gardner on December 13, 1922, she was the daughter of Leander and Margaret (Gaudet) Hamel.
Mrs. Moriarty was employed by Finast Supermarkets in New York City for 30 years until retiring in 1987.
She was a Gardner High School graduate. She was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church.
She was a member of AARP and the Gardner Golden Agers. She enjoyed bingo, playing cards and volunteering in many activities.
Her husband, Ernest Thomas Moriarty died in 2000.
She leaves 1 son, Paul Moriarty and wife Nancy of Saranac Lake, NY; 2 brothers, Edgar Hamel of Oklahoma and Rene Hamel of California; 4 sisters, Margaret Villani, Malvina McCusker both of Gardner, Marie Quinlisk of Otter River and Sister Marie Hamel of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Illinois; 4 grandchildren, Paul Joseph Moriarty and Stephen Michael Moriarty both of Long Island, NY, Kevin Thomas Moriarty of New Haven, Ct, and Jason Lawrence Hicks-Moriarty of New York; 1 Great-granddaughter, Emily Rita Moriarty of Seaford, NY; 1 great aunt, several nieces, nephews and cousins. A daughter, Marcia Moriarty died in 1970.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, July 6th at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St., Gardner. Burial of cremains will be in St. John's Cemetery, Gardner, at a later date.
