Richard F. "Dick" LaJoie, 86, of 122 Ryan St., Gardner, died peacefully Thursday, May 19th in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, Gardner, following a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Born in Gardner on May 31, 1924, he was the son of Arthur and Lottie (Machen) LaJoie.
Dick worked as an assembler for Kelly Brothers of Gardner, was a tractor-trailer driver employed by C & M Trucking Co. of Gardner, and Ruthier & Sons of Littleton, until retiring in 1987. He was also a bus driver for the Council on Aging in Gardner and Templeton. Together with his wife, he owned and operated the former Pine View Drive-In in Gardner from 1965 to 1978.
Mr. LaJoie earned his G.E.D. at Mount Wachusett Community College in 1995. He was a member of the American Legion Post 129 of Gardner, V.F.W. Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner, Silver Sneakers Fitness Program, the Gardner Golden Agers and Teamsters Union Local #4.
Dick was very active and enjoyed line dancing, bicycling, roller skating, ice skating, walking and traveling. He had many interests and loved to learn new things. He played the harmonica and organ, enjoyed listening to music and doing computer work. However, his greatest source of pleasure came from spending time with family and friends ice skating and boating at his pond on Ryan Street, swimming in his son's pool and playing with his grandchildren at Ogunquit and York Beaches. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Dick was a World War II U.S. Army Air Force Veteran.
He leaves his wife of 64 years, Georgette B. (LeBlanc) LaJoie of Gardner; a son, Richard D. "Dickle" LaJoie and his wife Janet of Gardner; 2 daughters, Nancy J. Greenlaw and her husband Keith of Gardner, Karen A. DeVincenzo and her husband Sal of Jamestown, CO; 1 brother, Thomas LaJoie of Vermont; a sister, Edna Ringuette of Gardner; 4 grandchildren, Marybeth McPadden, Cari Lastick, Jeremy Wnek, Maxwell DeVincenzo; 3 stepgrandchildren, William Bilodeau, Doreen Lashua, Susan Bilodeau and Monica Greenlaw Fisher; 9 great-grandchildren; 3 step-great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by 5 brothers, Arthur, Louis, Raymond, Gene and Joseph LaJoie and a sister, Leona Zub.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 26th at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon.
