Richard Joseph "Dick" "Ike" Ikonen, Sr., 68, of 535 East County Road, Rutland, died suddenly Saturday, January 17, 2015 in UMASS Memorial Medical Center, Lake Ave, Worcester, after being stricken ill at home.
Born in Gardner on December 29, 1946, he was the son of the late Reino and Margaret (Babineau) Ikonen.
Richard was raised in Gardner, and graduated from the former Worcester Boys Trade High School in 1964.
He was a United States Vietnam War Navy Veteran, and received the National Defense Service Medal.
Richard was a Machinist employed by Built-Rite Tool and Die, Inc. of Lancaster for 17 years, retiring in 2013. His previous employment history included Ikonen Tool and Die Co., Collier Keyworth Company and Digital Equipment Corporation.
He was a member of the Polish American Citizens Club of Gardner, The Loyal Order of Moose and a Lifetime Member of the Hubbardston Rod and Gun Club.
Richard enjoyed fishing, gunsmithing, cars, and watching NASCAR. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He leaves his wife of 48 years, Lillian (Castellani) Ikonen of Rutland; two sons, Richard J. Ikonen, Jr. and his wife Angela of Gardner and Roger Ikonen and his wife Linda of Hubbardston; two brothers, Henry Ikonen of Bradenton, FL and David Ikonen and his wife Darlene of Gardner; one sister, Mary Narkevicius of Gardner; four grandchildren, Kelsey Ikonen of Gardner and Alicen, Emily and Abigail Ikonen of Hubbardston; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services and burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon.
Callings hours will be Friday, January 23rd from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner.
