Richard Gemborys of Gardner, Massachusetts, died peacefully Friday, November 8, 2024, at the age of 86, surrounded by his family.
Born in Gardner in 1937, he was the son of the late Paul S. and Helen (Bukowski) Gemborys. He graduated from Gardner High School with the Class of 1955. A Veteran, he served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1960 and received the Good Conduct Medal. For 31 years, Richard worked on the Gardner Police Department, retiring as Chief of Police for the City of Gardner in 1992.
Richard was a devoted parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul Church of Baldwinville, and the former St. Joseph’s Church of Gardner. He was a member of the Polish American Citizens Club of Gardner, Massachusetts Police Chief Association, Royalston Fish and Gun Club, and the Central Mass Genealogical Society. An avid outdoorsman, Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, ice fishing, and gardening. He enjoyed taking long motorcycle rides with his beloved, late wife Joann. A skilled carpenter, Richard built his longtime home in Gardner for his growing family, his greatest joy. Above all else, Richard loved spending time with his family and sharing his stories.
Richard is survived by his son, Kenneth Gemborys of Phillipston, four daughters, Kyle Norbutus of Florida, Linda Doll and her husband Donald of Pennsylvania, Judith Cummings and her husband Mark of Spencer and Helen Poremba and her husband John of NH; thirteen grandchildren, Cory, Amanda and Britny Norbutus, Mackenzie, Douglas, and Jennifer Doll, Benjamin Gemborys, Kelsey Reimann and her husband Chris, Matthew Poremba and his wife Aubrey, Lindsey and Megan Poremba, and Logan and Coleborn Gemborys; three great-grandchildren, Amara Norbutus, Anne Reimann and Ren Poremba; one sister-in-law, Eva Gemborys of Gardner; his companion, Linda Anderson of Templeton; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Joann (Budzinski) Gemborys, who died in 2017; his infant daughter, Jeanne Gemborys; nine brothers, Max, Stanley, Paul, Frank, Chester, Joseph, Walter, John and Eugene Gemborys; and five sisters, Glady Stuckey Genevieve Gemborys, Barbara Gebo, Helena Breton, and Irene “Honey” Stacy.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, November 15, 2024, from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner, MA, with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in Annunciation Parish at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner, MA. Burial will follow at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon, MA.
Calling Hours will be held Thursday, November 14, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday, November 15, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. both in the funeral home.
