Ralph P. Gustafson

Ralph P. "Gus" Gustafson, 77, of 70 Baker St., Gardner died Wednesday, July 20th in his residence following an illness.

Born in Gardner on August 7, 1927, he was the son of Roland and Martha (Andersson) Gustafson.

He was a credit manager last employed by Country Home Furnishings of Gardner for 15 years, retiring in 1992. He was an engineer previously employed by Crompton & Knowles of Worcester for 15 years.

He was a 1945 graduate of Gardner High School, graduated from Boston University in 1951 with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, and in 1957 received a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from the University of Hartford, CT.

Mr. Gustafson was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Gardner.

He was a member of the Gardner High School Band and the U.S. Army Band. He was a member of the Swedish Social Club, Napoleon Club, Gardner Bridge Club, Gardner Golden Agers, Gardner AARP and was active in the Golf Circle winning many trophies in many leagues. He ran the Senior Thursday Men's Golf League with his golf partner, the late Cliff LaPierre, for 10 years. He had two Holes-In-One at the Gardner Golf Course. He was treasurer of the Friday Night Ten Pins Bowling League for 20 years and bowled with the Seniors at the Bowlaway in their Friday Candlepin League. He enjoyed playing pool at the Senior Center. He and his wife traveled in the USA, Canada and Europe. One of his greatest pleasures was taking day trips to Foxwoods.

Mr. Gustafson was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran and received the World War II Victory Medal.

He leaves his wife of 24 years, Therese M. (Bourque) Gustafson of Gardner; his stepmother, Marion (Clark) Gustafson of Gardner; 2 sons, Thomas R. Gustafson of Gardner, David R. Gustafson and wife Diane of New Braintree; 1 daughter, Ann Mitus and husband Paul of Gilbertville; 3 stepdaughters, Suzanne Mazur and husband Walter of North Providence, RI, Christine Bielak and husband Stanley of Warrenton, VA, Rosemarie McKenzie and husband Kevin of Largo, FL; 1 brother Robert Gustafson and wife Penny of Concord, CA; 6 grandchildren, Kurt, Joanna, Kristina, Melissa Gustafson, Robert and Stephen Mitus; 6 step-grandchildren; 2 nieces, Robyn Gustafson of Pollock Pines, CA and Martha Rolfson of Portland, OR; and several cousins.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, July 27th at 11:00 a.m. in the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner. Pastor David Cote will officiate. Burial of cremains will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.

Calling hours at the funeral home are Wednesday, July 27th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
