Ovila Downing, 86, of 774 Pearl Street, Gardner died Monday, July 25, 2011 in his residence, following an illness.
Ovila was born in N.B. Canada on January 30, 1925, the son of the late Phillip and Premelia (Gallant) Downing.
He was employed by Gem Crib Company of Gardner as a millwright worker for 34 years, retiring in 1987.
Ovila was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Gardner.
He enjoyed baseball, fishing, camping and square dancing. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his family.
Ovila leaves his wife of 63 years, Therese M. (Hebert) Downing of Gardner; two sons, Ronny J. Downing of Winchendon and Jerry P. Downing and his wife Linda of Gardner; four sisters, Lodia Legere and her husband Emery of Shediac, N.B. Canada, Alice Gagnon of Shediac, N.B. Canada, Lina Poirier of Shirley and Edna Poirier and her husband Amand of Shediac Bridge, N.B. Canada; two sister-in-laws, Marguerite Downing of Shediac, N.B. Canada and Ann-Marie Donelle of Ayer; two grandchildren, Tina Maskousky and Amy Knopsnyder; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Downing and Hanna Maskousky and a third great-grandchild, "Baby Boy Knopsnyder" due in October; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter, Linda Donelle; three brothers, Leo Downing, Alcide Donelle and Telex Donelle; and one sister, Lorette Cormier.
Funeral Services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
