Ovila A. Breau, 87, of 295 Waterford St., Gardner, died peacefully Wednesday, September 6th, in Leo P. LaChance Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, Rehabilitation Unit, Gardner, following a long illness.
Born in Moncton, N.B. Canada on June 13, 1919, he was the son of Evariste and Albina (Leger) Breau.
Ovila was a principal for 30 years in the Gardner School Systems, serving at Coleman Street School, Waterford Street School and Prospect Street School until retiring in 1983. He was most recently employed as a Title 1 Director for the City of Gardner.
He graduated from Gardner High School in 1937. Ovila received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1953 and a Masters Degree in Education in 1956 both from Fitchburg State College.
Ovila was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner. He was a member of the Greater Gardner Association for the Mentally Challenged Summer Program with his good friend John Kiosses. He was a member of the V.F.W. Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner, the Gardner Historical Society, and the Retired Mass Teachers Association. Ovila served on the Gardner Council of Aging.
Ovila was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He enjoyed horse races in Saratoga, Fl, reading newspapers and he loved politics.
Ovila was a W.W. II United States Army Veteran. He was attached to the 551st Signal Air Warning Battalion and received the Good Conduct Ribbon, the American-Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with three battle stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Victory Medal.
His wife of 50 years, Alice B. (LeBlanc) Breau died in 1998.
He leaves 3 sons, Robert A. Breau and his wife Elizabeth of Newburyport, MA, James E. Breau and his wife Karen of Littleton, MA, and Alan P Breau of San Mateo, CA; 2 daughters, Linda A. Breau-Norman and her husband Arthur A. of Leominster, Patricia M. Evans and her husband John C. of Gardner; a brother Joseph "Moe" E. Breau of San Diego, CA; 2 sisters, Stella Keresey and husband James of Gardner, and Theresa Dery of Orange, MA; 2 grandchildren, Gabrielle E. and Daniel J. Evans; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Ovila was predeceased by a brother, Arthur Breau.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 9th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner, with a mass at 12:30 p.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday, September 8th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
