Ovide E. Decato, 88, of Greenville, VA and formerly of 160 Chelsea Street, Gardner, died peacefully Thursday, October 18, 2012 in his daughter's home in Greenville, VA.
Born in Laconia, NH on November 27, 1923 he was the son of the late Dallas and Exzelia (Rameor) Decato.
Prior to retiring in 1988, Ovide was a tool and die maker employed by Collier-Keyworth Company of Gardner.
He graduated from Laconia High School, Laconia, NH with the Class of 1941.
Ovide was a United States WWII Army Air Corps Veteran, and was proud to have trained many fighter pilots in dog fighting skills in simulators prior to their deployment to the Pacific Theater of Operations.
He was a member of Holy Spirit Church in Gardner, and following his retirement was an Altar Server for daily Mass and funerals. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 129 of Gardner.
He had a long history of heart trouble but lived life actively in spite of it. Ovide enjoyed his retirement to its fullest; taking several trips with his wife, Eileen and enjoying many activities, including line dancing. He was an avid golfer and proud of occasionally breaking 80 at 80 years old. He enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox on television. His life centered around his family, and his most treasured times were those spent with family being productive, active and assisting with gardening and home improvement projects.
Ovide was predeceased by his wife, Eileen (Morrissey) Decato who died in 1999.
He leaves three sons, Alan D. Decato and his wife Maureen of West Rutland, Vermont, Thomas R. Decato and his wife Marcy of Corona, CA and Kenneth J. Decato of Gardner; two daughters, Joyce A. Holland and her husband Michael of Greenville, VA and Janet T. Huntley of Fredricksburg, VA; one brother, Hank Decato of Bakersfield, CA; one sister, Regis LaCroix and her husband Paul of Laconia, NH; 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one grandson, Aaron Decato; three brothers, Dorea, Emile and Leo Decato and by one sister, Bertha Decato.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 24th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Spirit Church, 50 Lovewell Street, Gardner. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be Wednesday, October 24th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
