Normand J. "Custard" Gallant, 81, of 209 Whitney Street, Gardner died peacefully Wednesday, November 14th in the Leo P. LaChance Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing.
He was born in Gardner on September 16, 1926, the son of the late Wilfred and Obline (Richard) Gallant.
Normand was Owner/Operator of NG Floor Covering of Gardner for several years, until his retirement in 1988. He was previously employed by Pelletier & Sons of Fitchburg for 19 years.
Mr. Gallant was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church. He was a member of the V.F.W. Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner, a Lifetime Member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 70 of Fitchburg, and a member of the Gardner Fish
& Game.
Normand was a WWII United States Navy Veteran, and received the American Area Medal, WWII Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal with 2 stars, and the Phillipine Liberation Medal with 2 stars.
He enjoyed playing cards, hunting and fishing. He was a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, and an avid collector of baseball cards.
He leaves his wife of 48 years, Carolyn M. (Howe) Gallant of Gardner; two sons, Jeffrey J. Gallant and James Gallant and his wife Maureen all of Gardner; two daughters, Heidi L. Sylvester and her husband Daniel of Hopkinton and Vickie A. Gallant of San Diego, CA; one brother, Donald J. (Zizzy) Gallant and his wife Gertrude of Gardner; two sisters, Stella Poirier and Lorraine Arsenault of Gardner; four grandchildren, Brandon Sylvester, Katlin Sylvester, Peter Gallant and Sam Gallant; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one brother, Wilfred Gallant, Jr. and one sister, Doris Poirier.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 20th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 10:00 am in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon.
Calling hours will be Monday, November 19th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the funeral home.
