Mildred "Millie" M. (Muscznicka) Gabis, 90, of 375 Pleasant St., Gardner, died Tuesday, December 30th, in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, following an illness.
Born in Poland on January 23, 1913, she was the daughter of Theodore and Marianna (Danisienka) Muscznicki.
She was a sales clerk employed by the former Goodnow-Pearson Company of Gardner for 25 years, retiring in 1978. She was previously employed by the J. C. Penney Co. and Heywood-Wakefield Company, both of Gardner.
Mrs. Gabis was a member of St. Joseph's Church where she was president of the St. Cecilia's Choir and its organist for many years. In the 1970's & 1980's she was substitute organist in several area churches. She served as president of the Holy Family Guild of Charity, Polish Roman Catholic Union, Polish American Social League, Polish American Political Club, and was well known for wearing native Polish dresses at Church festivals. She also served as president of the Gardner Emblem Club, Supreme Emblem Club of Massachusetts and the Holy Rosary Sodality. She was chairperson of the Gardner Chapter of March of Dimes and the Worcester County Catholic Charities. She was a member of the Democratic Caucus Committee and volunteered for the American Heart Association. Mrs. Gabis was a Polish interpreter for the Worcester County Court House and was very socially, religiously and politically active in the Gardner Area. She was known to help people in need by providing housing in her home and financial assistance when needed.
Her husband of 36 years, Joseph W. Gabis, died in 1967.
She leaves 2 sons, Joseph R. Gabis of Lunenburg and Stanislaus E. Gabis of Franklin; 1 daughter, Theresa A. Gabis of Athol; 1 sister, Helen VanDyne of Tampa, FL; 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Anna Buja of Gardner.
Funeral services will be held Saturday from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner with a Mass at 12:30 p.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 358 Pleasant St., Gardner.
Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday from 1:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
