Michael T. Smith, 73, of 663 Green Street, Gardner died peacefully Saturday, February 6th in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, Gardner surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.
Michael was born in Gardner on April 7, 1936, the son of the late Mitchel and Muriel R. (Walsh) Smith.
Michael was the City Treasurer for the City of Gardner for 21 years, retiring in 1997. He was previously the chief accountant/controller for Heywood Wakefield Co. of Gardner for several years, and an accountant for Commercial Credit Union.
Michael graduated from Gardner High School with the Class of 1954. He received an Associates Degree in Business Administration from Stevens Business School of Worcester in 1960.
Michael was a United States Air Force Korean War Veteran, and received the national Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Gardner. Michael was a member of the Gardner Fish and Gun Club, and served as Treasurer for several years, and he was a Life Member of the American Legion, Post 129 of Gardner. Michael was Chairman and served on the Gardner Conservation Committee for 15 years.
Michael enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, woodworking and reading. He was an amateur stamp collector, and an avid fan of the Boston Bruins and the New England Patriots. Michael played hockey for the Old Timers League for several years. He especially loved spending time with his family.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Patricia A. (Cummings) Smith of Gardner; two sons, Shawn M. Smith and his partner Paul J. Furey of Newbury, MA and Derek T. Smith and his wife Paige of Nottingham, NH; one sister, Beverly A. Troncoso and her husband Jesse of San Gabriel; one uncle, Bernard Walsh and his wife Rosemary of East Flat Rock, NC; two nieces and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 12th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 166 Cross Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be Friday, February 12th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
