Leonard J. Beauregard

Leonard J. "Smitty" Beauregard, 78, of 72 Monadnock St., Gardner where he has lived for the last 44 years, died Wednesday, August 17th in his residence following a long illness.

Born in Gardner on August 27, 1926, he was the son of C. Raymond and Doria (Laplante) Beauregard.

He was a Value Engineer employed by Simplex Time Recorder of Gardner for 40 years until retiring in 1988. He was then a part-time bagger at Stop & Shop for 15 years. He was affiliated with Beauregard Package Stores for several years. He also previously worked at the former Heywood-Wakefield Co. He prepared tax returns in his home for several years.

He was a graduate of Cushing Academy, Ashburnham, Nichols Junior College and received a degree in Business Administration from Clark University, Worcester.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church. He was a member of the Gardner Lions Club, V.F.W. Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner, and the American Legion Eugene M. Connor Post 193 of Winchendon. He enjoyed walking, bicycle riding, swimming, golfing, baseball and watching old western movies.

Mr. Beauregard was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and received the World War II Victory Medal, American Area Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal with 1 Star. He served on the NTC Sampson, NY, the NTS Newport, RI, and the USS St.Paul (CA 73).

He leaves his wife of 51 years, Claire I. (Plouffe) Beauregard of Gardner; 5 sons, James L. Beauregard and wife Michele of Springfield, Thomas A. Beauregard and wife Mary of Hubbardston, Andre P. Beauregard of Rindge,NH, John D. Beauregard of Leominster and Timothy A. Beauregard of Gardner; 3 brothers, Chester Beauregard and wife Joan, Francis Beauregard and wife Jeanette, Roland "Turk" Beauregard all of Gardner; 1 sister, Rachel Watikus of Norwood; 9 grandchildren, Andre, Christina, Brandon, Lauren, Allen, Renee Beauregard, Jamie Lee Cannady, Carrie Gilbert, and Justin Guyer; 4 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Estelle Roy.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 22nd from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St., Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.

Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday, August 21st from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
