Leo J. Melanson, 95, of Bolton, formerly of Gardner, died peacefully Saturday, May 7, 2016 in Sterling Village of Sterling, MA, following a brief illness.
Born in St. Antoine, N.B. Canada on May 26, 1920, he was the son of the late John and Osithe (Allain) Melanson.
Leo was a United States WWII Army Veteran and received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Purple Heart, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with One Bronze Service Star and the Victory Medal.
He was a mechanic employed by Domino Sugar of Versailles, CT for many years.
Leo was a member of Annunciation Parish/Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church of Gardner. He was also a member of the Gardner Chapter of AARP.
Leo enjoyed photography, traveling, bird watching and wood carving. He was a devout Catholic who recited the Rosary daily. He was a loving, giving man who was extremely generous to his family.
Leo was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Dora M. (Johnson) Melanson, who died in 2011.
He leaves one brother, Norman Melanson and his wife Yvonne of Port Charlotte, FL; several nieces and nephews, Peter Dupuis and his wife Stacey (Pugliese) and their daughter Catherine with whom he lived, Kenneth Dupuis, Steven Dupuis, Pauline Ippilito, Lionel Melanson, Jane Melanson, Denise Mulloy, Ronnie Melanson, John Melanson, Cynthia Kacian, Sheila Valiton, Judy LaFrenniere and Scott Melanson; several great-nieces, great nephews and cousins. Leo was predeceased by his brother, Edgar Melanson; sister, Rose Dupuis; niece, Kim Fuller; and nephew, Raymond Melanson.
Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held Friday, May 13th at 2:00 p.m. in Notre Dame Cemetery, West Street, Gardner.
There are no calling hours.
