Leo A. Bourque, 84, of Gardner, died peacefully Tuesday, February 15th in Hillcrest Nursing Home, Fitchburg, following a long illness.
He was born in New Bedford, MA on October 30, 1926, the son of the late Oswald and Rose M. (Ouimette) Bourque.
Leo was employed by the United States Postal Service in Ayer, MA as Postmaster for 28 years, retiring in 1986. He was previously a Postal Clerk in Gardner for many years.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Perpetual Adoration Chapel.
Leo was a WWII United States Marine Corps Veteran and participated in the Okinawa Campaign, the Third Fleet Operations against Japan and the occupation of the Yokosuka, Japan. He was issued the Certificate of Satisfactory Service; issued 2 patches, khaki, 2 patches, green, honorable service; issued honorable service and USMC honorable service discharge buttons, and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus of Gardner and he was Captain of the Honor Guard and Past Commander of the American Legion, Post 129 of Gardner. Leo was Past Chief Guard of "La Societe de Quarante Hommes et 8 Chevaux."
He enjoyed playing cards, reading, jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles. Leo also enjoyed camping, traveling and was quite the handyman. In his younger years he was a talented yodeler.
Leo leaves his wife of 63 years, Claire H. (Beauregard) Bourque of Gardner; one son, David A. Bourque and his wife Susan E. of Milford, NH; one daughter, Denise A. Harris and her husband Willy of Gardner; one sister, Florence Roy and her husband Roland, Jr. of New Bedford; two grandchildren, Jason J. Cote of Georgia and Megan C. Harris of Gardner; two great-grandchildren, Emma B. Maylin and Anderson S. Cote; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one son, Steven L. Bourque who died in 1988 and one sister, Antoinette Orlowski.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 18th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 2:00 p.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner at a later date.
Calling hours in the funeral home are Thursday, February 17th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church or to the St. Vincent de Paul Society both at 135 Nichols Street, Gardner, MA 01440.
