Larry E. Smith, 71, of 9 Draper Road, Gardner, died peacefully Monday, October 27, 2014 in his residence following a long illness.
Larry was born in Ellenburg, NY on August 7, 1943, the son of the late Dominey and Laura (Forette) Smith.
He attended Athol High School of Athol.
Larry was a United States Korean War Army Veteran and received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He was employed in the maintenance department of Rural Housing Inc. of Gardner for 10 years, retiring in 2005.
Larry was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church of Gardner.
He enjoyed golfing, bowling and playing pool. He treasured time spent with his family.
He was a member and past President of the Napoleon Club of Gardner, member of the VFW Post 905, Ovila Case of Gardner and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #747 of Gardner.
Larry leaves his wife of 36 years, Janet L. (Levesque) Smith of Gardner; one son, Eric E. Smith and his significant other, Katie Prentiss of Gardner; one brother, Dominey Smith, Jr. of CT; two sisters, Valida Smith of Orange and Pauline Foster of Orange; one grandson, Alexander E. Smith; three additional children, Laura Smith, Lisa Smith and Larry Smith, Jr.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one sister, Rita LaFountain.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, October 30th at 11:30 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Road, Winchendon.
A calling hour will be Thursday, October 30th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.
