Judith "Judy" Marie (Babineau) Marceau, 61, of 221 Gardner Road, Hubbardston, died Tuesday, May 6th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner surrounded by her family following a short illness.
Born in Gardner on August 10, 1946, she was the daughter of George and Bernice (Johnson) Babineau of Hubbardston.
Prior to retiring in 2003, Judy was a third grade teacher in Gardner since l982. She was previously an art teacher in the Gardner Public Schools from 1970 - 1982, and Quabbin Regional School District from 1967 - 1970. In 2004, Judy operated "Babineaus Antique Shop" from her home in Hubbardston.
Judy was a 1964 graduate of Gardner High School, Gardner. In 1967 she graduated from the School of Worcester Art Museum, received an award for outstanding achievement, and in 1970 she graduated from Clark University, Worcester with a Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts. She was certified to teach art in grades kindergarten through eighth, and certified to classroom teach grades kindergarten through sixth. She currently had 39 inservice credits beyond her Bachelor's Degree.
In 1967 Judy was appointed the Bicentennial Queen for the Town of Hubbardston. Judy was part of the 225th Anniversary Committee for the Town of Hubbardston in 1992. She also wrote and illustrated the "Hubbardston History" as seen from a childs' view, which is used in classrooms today.
Judy served on the following committees, third grade Math Curriculum Committee, third grade Social Studies Curriculum Committee, and K-6th grade Art Curriculum Committee. She was a representative for the Gardner Education Association, Specialists Representative on the G.E.A. Executive Board for three terms, the Prospect Building Representative for one term, and a Negotiation Representative for contracts for two terms.
During her teaching career, Judy was instrumental in the achievements accomplished by her students. In 1974, six of her students were honored nationally by the American Automobile Association for outstanding posters. In 1975 she organized the Art Club at Elm Street School and in 1979 the Art Club published a local history book; "Fascinating Facts of Gardner" which they illustrated and is currently being used in classrooms. In 1991, 1993, 1994 and from 1999 through 2003 her students received Highest Honors Award from the Environmental Protection Agency for their class poem. In 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997 students under her guidance submitted poetry to the national publication "Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans" which resulted in over forty students' writings being accepted for publication. In 1994, Judy received a citation in tribute and recognition of exceptional achievement attained with her students from Mayor Manca. In 1999 Judy's third grade class established the Massachusetts State colors of cranberry, blue and green. The process took five years, and was finally completed in 2004 by former Governor Mitt Romney. In 2006, Judy was honored as "Woman of the Year" in Gardner.
Judy was fun-loving, compassionate, the greatest jokester and known to be the "life of the party". She had a passion for poetry, writing personal poems for friends and family that she often gave as gifts. She also loved water color painting, giving those as gifts as well, both items treasured by the recipient. Judy loved cats, dancing and especially her family. She will be remembered always for the following two phrases: "too many parties, too little time" and "it's been vivid". Judy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Besides her parents, Judy leaves her husband of 19 years, Glenn F. Marceau of Hubbardston; one son, Kenneth J. Krymowski and his wife Angela of Hubbardston; one daughter Kathryn V. Young and her husband Jeffrey of Hubbardston; two step-sons, Glenn J. Marceau of Hubbardston and Keith O. Marceau and his wife Karen of Fitchburg; one step-daughter, Wendy M. O'Toole and her husband Rick of Hubbardston; one brother, George A. Babineau and his wife Brenda of Gardner; six sisters, her twin- June M. Girouard and her husband Charles of Hubbardston, Barbara A. Carpenter and her husband James of Hubbardston, Linda M. McDonald and her husband Phillip of Haines City, Fl, Betty J. Smith and her husband Marshall of Gardner, Carol E. Therrien and her husband Kenneth of Ellington, CT and Kathy L. Newton and her husband Robert of Hubbardston; nine grandchildren, Angel M. and Shi-Ann E. Bourgeois, twins - Hunter A and Destiny J. Young and twins - Summer F. and Jasmine V. Young, Patrick and Sean O'Toole and Kinsey Marceau; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 12th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Spirit Church, 50 Lovewell Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Hubbardston at a later date.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be Sunday, May 11th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm
