Joseph G.A. Gallant, 81, of 525 West Broadway, Gardner, died peacefully, Wednesday, August 13, 2014 in his residence, surrounded by family, following a long illness.
Joseph was born in Mexico, Maine on May 15, 1933, the son of the late Joseph A. and Lina (Jolin) Gallant.
Joseph was a United States Korean War Army Veteran and received the Occupational Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a maintenance worker employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the former Rutland Heights State Hospital of Rutland for 30 years, retiring in 1979. He was also a farmer, and a locksmith who owned and operated New England Lock and Security Company.
Joseph was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church of Gardner. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 129 of Gardner and the V.F. W. Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner.
Joseph enjoyed farming and selling his vegetables at various farmers markets. He raised homing pigeons, and was a member of the Pigeon Clubs of Gardner, Fitchburg, Worcester and Ashburnham.
Joseph leaves his wife of 54 years, Mary E. (Riley) Gallant of Gardner; one sister, Theresa Leger of Gardner; one granddaughter, Stephanie J. Hervan and her husband Matthew of Templeton; two great-grandchildren, Mikai and Murphy of Templeton; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, Joseph A. Gallant who died February 22, 2014; two brothers, Arthur and Alfred Gallant; and three sisters, Bertha Krzykowski, Yvette Aube and Irene Gauthier.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, August 19th at 2:00 p.m. in the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner.
A calling hour will be Tuesday, August 19th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
