Joseph R."Ray" Cormier

February 18, 1926 — October 31, 2008

Joseph R. "Ray" Cormier, 82, of 821 Daniel Shays Highway, Athol, formerly of Regan Street, Gardner, died Friday, October 31st in Quabbin Valley Healthcare, Athol.

Born in Gardner on February 18, 1926, he was the son of the late John P. and Evangeline (Belliveau) Cormier.

Mr. Cormier was a finisher employed by Collier-Keyworth Manufacturing for 24 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Baldwinville.

"Ray" was a member of the League of the Sacred Heart, Holy Rosary Church, Gardner and the VFW Ovila Cast Post 905 of Gardner.

He enjoyed playing bingo and watching baseball, especially the Boston Red Sox.

"Ray" was a United States Korean War Army Veteran, and received the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, M. Rachel (Arsenault) Cormier who died in 2004.

"Ray" leaves one son, Phillip R. Cormier of Athol; two daughters, Diane M. Borey and her husband Ozzie of Longwood, FL and Sandra A. Divoll and her husband Rocky of Baldwinville; two brothers, Paul Cormier of Charleston, SC and George Cormier of Sudbury, MA; one sister, Florence Godin of Apple Valley, CA; four grandchildren, Shaun Borey of Longwood, FL, Nicholas Borey and his wife Jaimie of Orlando, FL, Christina Divoll of Hanover, NH and Petty Officer Alexander Divoll of the U.S. Navy of Goose Creek, SC; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Louise Nelson.

A Memorial Service will be held Monday, December 29th at 11:00 a.m. in the MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon.

There are no calling hours.
