John R. "Red" Howard, 84, of 11 River Rd., Otter River, died peacefully Wednesday, July 8th in Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, surrounded by his family, following a short illness.
Born in Gardner on September 14, 1924, he was the son of Earl and Lillian (Daly) Howard.
At the time of his death, Red was a self-employed barber at Howard's Barbershop for 63 years, having started in 1947.
He was a 1946 graduate of the New England School of Barbering in Boston.
He was a member of St. Martin's Church in Otter River, Knights of Columbus Council #2536 of Otter River, the Napoleon Club, V.F.W. Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner, Disabled American Veterans, and the Gardner Merchants Football Team. Mr. Howard was an avid golfer, skier and enjoyed hunting, fishing, football and baseball.
Red was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and received the Purple Heart and the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon with two bronze battle stars.
His wife of 52 years, Rita Y. (Richard) Howard, died in 1998.
He leaves 2 sons, Daniel J. Howard and his companion, Joyce of Margate, Florida, Pastor Timothy R. Howard and his wife Sue of the Grace Brethren Church of Simi Valley, California; 1 brother, George Howard of Cape Cod; 4 sisters, Patricia VanDuren of Houston, Texas, Ann Beaudet and her husband Nelson of California, Earlene Dickson of Templeton, Sheila Couture and her husband Norman of Templeton; 7 grandchildren, Michelle Wilkinson of Gardner, Daniel J. Howard II of Templeton, Michelle Velikorodnyy of Santa Clarita, California, Kimberly Kolstad, Abigail Walker, Rebekah Walter and Kristin Howard all of Simi Valley, California; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 13th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in St. Martin's Church, 248 State Road, Otter River. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday, July 12th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
