John was born in Fitchburg on May 20, 1927, the son of the late Urho and Helmi (Lakso) Heisson. He graduated from Fitchburg High School of Fitchburg with the Class of 1945 and immediately joined the Merchant Marines. He served aboard the Liberty Ships Andrew Furuseth and Solomon Juneau crossing the North Atlantic many times, reaching many countries in Europe, Africa and South America. Prior to joining the military he served Fitchburg as a plane spotter and air raid warden. He was also employed in a Finnish Co-op store.

He enjoyed repairing just about anything and loved to work outside driving his prized antique tractors. When it was time to build his own home, John surprised the contractor by handing him the blueprints he had drawn himself. Since retiring he has also spent many enjoyable hours researching his family roots from Fitchburg back to Finland in the late 18th century.
