John E. "Big John" Charland, 72, of 55 Clark Street, Gardner, died unexpectedly Thursday, June 28th in his residence.
He was born in Gardner on January 7, 1935, the son of the late Euclid and Helen E. (Maliska) Charland.
John was a self-employed general contractor for thirty years, retiring in 1999.
He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. John was a past member of the U.S. National Guard.
John was an avid golfer, and was a member of the Gardner Men's Golf League on Tuesdays and the Senior Men's Golf League. He enjoyed woodworking and polka dancing.
He leaves his wife of 53 years, Lorraine M. (Powers) Charland; a daughter, Lynn J. Morin and her husband Lawrence of Rindge, NH; a daughter-in-law, Laura Lawrence of Templeton; two brothers, Richard J. Charland and his wife Sandra of Hubbardston, and Vernon L. Charland and his wife Sylvia of Phillipston; one sister, Renee A. O'Donnell and her husband Brian of Bedford; two grandchildren, Shannon R. Charland of Templeton and Andrew S. Morin of Rindge, NH; two aunts, Angela Beausoleil of Jaffrey, NH and Rita Charland of Athol; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sons; Steven J. Charland who died in 1982 and Mark W. Charland who died in 2000; a brother, James F. Charland who died in 1982 and a sister, Joan E. Whitmore who died in 1994.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 2nd from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 166 Cross Street, Gardner. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday, July 1st from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
