James W. Kelly, 83, a resident of Ashburnham since 1995, known to friends and family as "Kelly", died peacefully Friday, October 30, 2015 in his residence surrounded by family, following a long illness.
Born in Staten Island, NY on June 27, 1932, he was the son of the late William and Minnie (Geba) Kelly. He attended McKee High School, Staten Island.
James was a United States Korean War Army Veteran and received the Korean Service Medal with two bronze service stars and the United Nations Service Medal.
He was employed by the New York City Transit Authority as a track specialist for 25 years, retiring in 1985. He was previously employed by US Gypsum on Staten Island in the concrete block department.
James enjoyed working in the garden and enjoyed all types of yard work. He also took great pride in decorating his yard for Halloween and Christmas. He was a member of the American Legion Thomas P. Sweeney Post 142 of Ashburnham, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5509 Donald A. Gates of Ashburnham, and was a lifetime member of the Turnpike Rod and Gun Club of Ashburnham. He was previously a member of the Ocean Yacht Club in Stapleton, when he resided in Staten Island.
James leaves his beloved wife, Joan M. (Hallihan) Kelly of Ashburnham, with whom he would have celebrated 60 years of marriage in December; three daughters, Eileen P. Dyer and her husband Randy Dyer of Westminster, US Navy Commander Barbara Kelly-Mertz and her husband Major Charles Mertz of the Air National Guard of Newport, RI and Colleen M. Kelly and her significant other Armand Fougere, Jr. of Ashburnham; his only grandson whom he loved dearly, Timothy J. Lahtinen and his wife Stephanie Lahtinen of Westminster; great-grandson, Elliott Murphy of Westminster; three special nephews, Thomas McNutt of Mint Hill, NC, Paul McNutt of Nashua, NH and Robert McNutt of Litchfield, NH; and many additional nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his sister, Patricia McNutt.
Funeral Services and burial with Military Honors will be held Friday, November 6th at 3:00 p.m. in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon, MA.
