J. Edgar Richard

J. Edgar Richard, 92, of 5903 Mt. Eagle Drive, Alexandria, VA, formerly of Jonathan Street, Gardner, died Sunday, November 3, 2013 in UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester, after being stricken ill while traveling home to Virginia following his daughter's funeral service on November 2, 2013 in Gardner.
Born in Northbridge on May 6, 1921, he was the son of the late Deliza Richard.
Edgar was a United States WWII Army Veteran, and received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Service Stars, Distinguished Unit Badge and the Victory Medal.
Edgar studied watchmaking and repair at the North Bennet Street School in the North End of Boston from 1949 thru 1951
He owned and operated Richards Jewelry Store in Gardner for 35 years, retiring in 1985.
Edgar was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Gardner. He was a Fourth Degree Bishop Beaven Assembly of the Knights of Columbus, Fitchburg.
Edgar enjoyed golfing, skiing, oil painting, theatre and musicals. He enjoyed the beach, boating and fishing with his granddaughter, and had fond memories of swimming with the dolphins in Bermuda at the age of 85. He was an avid fan of Boston Red Sox and the Washington Nationals baseball teams. Edgar most enjoyed spending time with his family.
He leaves his wife of 60 years, Marie B. (Pandiscio) Richard of Virginia; one son, Carl J. Richard and his wife Trish of Alexandria, VA; one daughter Anne M. Richard and her husband John B. Connor of Alexandria, VA; two granddaughters, Maia Richard Easton of Taos, New Mexico and Hannah M.M. Connor and her husband Brennan Connelly of Washington, D.C.; two nieces, four nephews and several cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter, Lisa M. Richard who died in September 14, 2013.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 6th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, November 6th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner, MA 01440.
