Henry V. Jean

Henry V. Jean, 89, of 427 Park Street, Gardner, died Monday, January 28th in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home surrounded by his family, following a long illness.

Born in Gardner on June 22, 1918, he was the son of the late Victor J. and Delina M. (Houde) Jean.

Henry was a foreman in department 56 of L.S. Starrett Company of Athol for 23 years, retiring in 1980. He was formerly employed by Florence Stove Company, Gardner, MA.

Henry attended St. Joseph's Preparatory School in Colebrook, N.H.

He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Gardner. He was also a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #396 of Gardner, and a member of the Gardner Chapter of the A.A.R.P.

Henry enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing with his brothers. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He also enjoyed hockey. Henry was an accomplished carpenter, and built his own home.

Henry was a United States WWII Coast Guard Veteran. He served on the U.S.S Algonquin as a ship's cook - third class, and received the American Theatre Area Campaign ribbon, the European-African Middle Eastern Area Campaign ribbon, the Coast Guard Good Conduct ribbon and the WWII Victory Campaign ribbon.

He leaves his wife of 65 years, Grace E. (Dixon) Jean of Gardner; two daughters, Patricia J. Sadin and her husband Thomas of Savoy, MA and Virginia M. Hakkinen and her husband William of Ledyard, CT; three brothers, Sylvio Jean and his wife Delia, Normand Jean and his wife Theresa and Roland Jean and his wife Rita all of Gardner; two sisters, Rita Garneau and her husband Edward of Gardner, and Agnes Caron of Winchendon, MA; one sister-in-law, Beatrice Jean of Athol; four grandchildren, James Sadin and his wife Lisa of Rutland, Thomas Sadin and his wife Tonya of Ft. Worth, TX, Erika Hakkinen of Uncasville, CT and Kimberly Hakkinen of New Haven, CT; three great-grandchildren, David, Amanda and Sawyer; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Henry was predeceased by one brother Leopold Jean.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 31st from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 1:00 p.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 166 Cross Street, Gardner. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Gardner.

Calling hours in the funeral home will be Thursday, January 31st from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.
