Harold E. "Harry" Richards, 84, of 19 City Hall Avenue, Gardner died Wednesday, September 9th in Heywood Hospital, Gardner.
Born in Gardner on July 12, 1925, he was the son of the late Leonard and Laudia (LaPrade) Richard.
Prior to becoming blind at the age of 24, Harry was a factory worker, employed by Nichols and Stone Co. of Gardner, and previously by Brown Bros. of Gardner.
Harry graduated from Gardner High School, Gardner with the Class of 1942.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner.
He was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed following high school sports, the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. Harry was an early organizer of community sports. Despite his handicap, Harry took great pleasure in playing the lottery, playing cards and could remember multiple sports statistics. He was loved for his wit, amazing memory, optimistic outlook and boundless devotion to his family.
Harry leaves his wife of 63 years, Louise M. (Cormier) Richards of Gardner; one son, Douglas J. Richards and his wife Anne of Mendon, MA; two daughters, Jane M. Magliacane and her husband Steve of Gardner and Carol J. Walkley and her husband Peter of Laconia, NH; four grandchildren, Christopher and Kenzie Walkley and Ryan and Matthew Richards; several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his best friends, Rene Laliberte of Gardner and Therese and George Salame of Westminster. He was predeceased by one brother and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 12th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner, with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner.
A calling hour in the funeral home will be Saturday, September, 12th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
