Godfrey D. Leger, 87, died peacefully surrounded by his family, Wednesday, September 2nd in Gardner.
Born in Gardner on July 7, 1922, he was the son of the late Philias O. and Margaret (LeBlanc) Leger.
Godfrey was a machinist employed by Craigin-Wilkins Company of Gardner for 20 years, retiring in 1984. He was previously employed by Heywood Wakefield of Gardner for 20 years.
Godfrey attended Worcester Boys Trade School, Worcester.
He was a WWII United States Army Veteran, and received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. Godfrey served in the China, Burma, India Theater.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner, and its League of Sacred Heart Society.
Godfrey was a member of the V.F.W. Ovila Post 905 of Gardner. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #396 of Gardner.
Godfrey enjoyed golf and figure skating. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.
He leaves his beloved wife of 62 years, Beatrice M. (Brassard) Godfrey of Gardner; one son, Francis G. Leger and his wife Dr. Carole Lee of Georgetown, Texas; two daughters, Susan B. Smith and her husband Travis L. of Peabody and Louise D. Morgenstern and husband Robert H. of Gardner; two sisters, Muriel Bettez of Gardner and Rita Morin of Fredericksburg, VA; three grandchildren, Erin L. Foote and her husband Casey of Peabody, Jason Morgenstern and his wife Laura of Gardner and Jennifer Morgenstern of Lowell; four great-grandchildren, Abby, Ben, Liam and Gabriella; several nieces, nephews, cousins and also his extended WM family. Godfrey was predeceased by a brother, Jules O. Leger, and by two sisters, Lorraine LaRoche and Lea McKusick.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 7th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
A calling hour in the funeral home will be Monday, September 7th from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
