Gerene T. "Gerry" (Cormier) Hamel, 77, of 411 State Rd., Otter River, died peacefully Saturday, May 21st in U. Mass Memorial Hospital, Lake Ave., Worcester, following an illness, surrounded by her family.
Born on December 16, 1933, she was the daughter of Philippe and Cecile (Cormier) Cormier.
She was a secretary and bookkeeper employed by the former Dow Concrete of East Templeton for 10 years until retiring in 1996. She was previously a Title Examiner employed by Atty. Charles Gelinas of Fitchburg.
Gerry was a 1952 graduate of Gardner High School. She was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church.
She was a former member of St. Martin's Church Parish Council and the St. Martin's Women's Club in Otter River. Gerry was organist at St. Martin's Church and sang in the choir for 20 years. She was a member of the Women's Ensemble at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church and was also a member of the Templeton Golden Agers. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crafts and was a lover of cats. Her greatest enjoyment came from being a loving grandmother, greatgrandmother and great-greatgrandmother.
Her husband of 31 years, Yves O. Hamel, died in 1984.
She leaves 4 sons, Neal O. Hamel and his companion Cathy Burhoe of Otter River, Philip M. Hamel and his wife Michelle of Templeton, Gerald A. Hamel and his wife Sharon of Columbus, MO, Denis J. Hamel and his wife Brenda of Otter River; 5 daughters, Donna E. Dow and her husband Steven of Bouckleville, NY, Christine M. Barrieau and her husband Mark of Baldwinville, Yvette P. Boisvert of Phillipston, Lee R. Hullette and her husband Michael of Templeton, Louise F. Fleck-Creamer and her husband John of Winchendon; a brother, Roger Cormier of Clermont, FL; 13 grandchildren, Michael Dow, John Paul and Christopher Barrieau, Mathew Boisvert, Eric and Cory Hamel, Timothy and Scott Fleck, Sharon Manca, Jennifer Gariepy, Brittany and Amanda Hamel, Alisha Smith; several great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by an infant brother Robert Cormier, and 2 sisters, Lorina Y. Hamel and infant Mary Cormier.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 25th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St., Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Tuesday, May 24th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
