George R. Drouin, 83, of 14 Water Wheel Circle, Templeton and Palmetto, Florida and formerly of 22 S. Main Street, Baldwinville, died peacefully Wednesday, August 11th in his Templeton residence, surrounded by his family.
George was born in Gardner on November 4, 1926, the son of the late Alfred J. and Beatrice F. (Bourgeault) Drouin.
He was Founder, Owner and Operator of Maplewood Inc. in Ashburnham for 30 years, retiring in 1995.
George attended Gardner High School and received his GED for the Class of 1946 in a Veterans Ceremony on May 20, 1999. He also attended Leominster Trade High School.
George was a WWII United States Marine Corp. Veteran, and received the American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Gardner, and was a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Finance Committee. George was a founder of St. Vincent dePaul Parish in Baldwinville, where he served as Past Chairman of the Parish Council and for 15 years was Co-Chairman of the Bishops Fund Drive, a CCD teacher, team member of the Cursillo Movement for 9 years and Chairman of the Gardner Deanery Retreat League of Calvary Monastry. He and his wife were Co-Chair couple of the Gardner Deanery for Family Life.
George was a life member of the following organizations; Ovila Case VFW Post 905 of Gardner, D.A.V. Post 46 of Athol, Fourth Degree Bishop Beaven Assembly Knights of Columbus and the Otter River Knights of Columbus #2536, where he served as past Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Gardner Salmon Club.
George enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His hobbies included playing cards every Friday night, traveling, playing golf and reading both non-fiction and History books. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. George also enjoyed spending time in Florida.
George was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy P. (LeBlanc) Drouin, who died May 22, 2009.
He leaves five sons, Mark P. Drouin and his wife Corrine of Oakham, Alan J. Drouin and his wife Karen of Ashburnham, Gary P. Drouin of Templeton, Brian G. Drouin and his wife Susan of Phillipston and Craig D. Drouin and his wife Bernadette of Winchendon; three daughters, Deborah D. Brown and her husband Robert of Westminster, Michelle D. Weiss and her husband Joseph of Glastonbury, CT and Plyllis J. Charters and her husband "Ripp" of Gardner; one brother, Joseph Alfred Drouin and his wife Pearl of Templeton; one sister, Rachel Brouillet of Bradenton, FL; thirteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, John Drouin and Eugene Drouin and by two sisters, Marie Murray and Anna Richard.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, August 16th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours will be Sunday, August 15th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
