Frank William "Bill" Kiewel, 81, of 1 Millbrook Drive, Templeton died peacefully Tuesday, November 29, 2011 in Legend Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, Gardner, surrounded by his family, following a long battle with cancer.
Bill was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 27, 1930, the son of the late Frank W. and Anna Kiewel.
He graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia, PA with the Class of 1947, and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA in 1953.
He was a United States Korean War Navy Veteran and received the National Defense Service Medal. He graduated from the US Navy Officers Candidate School in Newport, RI on September 11, 1953 and later graduated from Naval Aviator Training in Corpus Christi, TX. Bill served his country from 1953 through 1964 as a Naval Aviator, primarily as a search and rescue Pilot. He served in the Great Lakes, Il, Pensacola, FL, San Diego, CA, Corpus Christi, TX, Oak Harbor, WA, Brunswick, GA, Kwajalein and Wake Islands, South Pacific. After being discharged from the Navy, Bill became a Pilot for US Airways, flying out of Newark, NJ and Boston, MA, until his retirement in 1986.
Bill was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Gardner, the Soaring Eagles (retired US Air Pilots) and the American Legion Post 129 of Gardner.
He enjoyed flying, traveling, reading and crossword puzzles. Bill was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, the Boston Celtics and the Boston Bruins.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Jean "Jean" Kiewel of Templeton; one daughter, Attorney Jean Anne Kiewel and her husband Stuart Savel of Chester, VT; two sons, Edward William Kiewel of Greenfield and James Robert Kiewel and his wife Patricia of Gardner; three granddaughters, Ilana Jean Savel Newton, Cortney Jean Kiewel and Erin Nicole Kiewel; two great-grandchildren, Abram Newton and Lilian Jean Newton; and one nephew, Bret David Williams of Narragansett, RI.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 5th at 10:00 a.m. in Faith Lutheran Church, 627 Green Street, Gardner. Pastor Scott Grimshaw will officiate. Burial will be in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon.
