Ernest "T-Ness" J. Poirier, 88, of 7 Mission Street, Gardner, died Saturday, December 9th in the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Leeds, MA, following an illness.
Born in Gardner on December 1, 1918, he was the son of Wilfred and Sylvia (Allain) Poirier.
Ernest was an assembler employed by Simplex Time Recorder in Gardner for 32 years, retiring in 1985.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner. He belonged to the Gardner Golden Agers, was a member of the Acadien Social Club, Gardner and the Templeton Fish and Game Club. He was a member of the V.F.W. Ovila Case Post 905 of Gardner where he was Sr. Vice Commander, and he was also a member of the Paralized Veterans Association.
Ernest was a WWII United States Army Veteran. He was a Paratrooper with the 507th Infantry Regiment Parachute. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, the Silver Star, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the American Defense Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead.
He was a pilot and enjoyed spending time at the Gardner airport. He was a Golden Glove Boxer. Ernest enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Ernest leaves his wife of 59 years, Lucina M. (Poirier) Poirier; one son, Gordon E. Poirier and his wife Sandra M. of Hubbardson; two daughters, Michelle M. Keeney and her husband John of Gardner, Denise S. Kuehl and her husband Joseph of Baldwinville; two sisters, Rachel Healey and her husband Charles, and Lorraine Trinque all of Gardner; three grandchildren, Rocco Dellasanta, Jodi Thompson and Joseph Kuehl; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by five brothers, Gerald, Francis, Edward, Henry and Clarence Poirier; and one sister, Geraldine Riley.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 13th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, West Street, Gardner.
A calling hour at the funeral home will be Wednesday, December 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
