Elaine M. (Roy) Stickney, 79, died Sunday, June 20th in her residence. She was born in Gardner on May 14, 1931, the daughter of the late Alma (Couture) Roy and Frank Xavier Roy.
She graduated from Holy Rosary School and Gardner High School, Class of 1949, where she played varsity field hockey, basketball and softball. In 1953, she graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor Degree in Physical Education. She earned a Masters Degree in Education from Fitchburg State College in 1956. Mrs. Stickney taught Physical Education in Florida and Massachusetts schools during the next few years, namely the Ashby-Townsend School, Fitchburg High School and Fitchburg State College.
In 1963 she married Henry J. Stickney, Sr., her partner and devoted husband. They remained partners throughout her life. They were blessed with three children, Heidi Girouard of Phillipston, Jane Stickney deceased in 1984, and Henry Stickney, Jr. of East Templeton. The family enjoyed sports, and all participated in community sports programs as coaches and players.
Elaine was active in her church and also in Girl Scouts. In her later years, she earned a Social Workers License and worked in various local nursing homes.
Mrs. Stickney leaves her beloved sister Jeanne Alaimo, her ever optimistic daughter-in-law Shannon Stickney and four delightful and beloved grandchildren, Travis Stickney, Thora Stickney, Stephanie Girouard and Jennifer Girouard. She also leaves a sister-in-law, Sally Johnson and her husband Roger Johnson, a nephew Barry Johnson and his wife Jackie, and a great nephew Andrew Johnson. Also, a nephew Alan Alaimo and his sons, Scott and Tony Alaimo of MO, and a niece Cynthia Couture of Marlboro, MA.
Elaine's goal in life was to improve the lives of others and to make this a better world than when she came into it. She feels that with God and her husband as her partners, she was successful.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, June 24th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be Wednesday, June 23rd from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
