Edmond J. "Ed" Richard, 88, of 35 Nichols Street, Gardner died peacefully in his sleep Thursday, March 8, 2012 in the Baldwinville Nursing Home, Baldwinville, following a period of declining health.
Born in Gardner on May 30, 1923, he was the son of the late John D. and Melendy (LeBlanc) Richard.
Edmond was employed by the City of Gardner as a Custodian in the Gardner School System for many years, retiring in 1986. He was previously employed by Heywood Wakefield Company of Gardner and Maynard Machine and Tool of Ashburnham.
Edmond was a United States WWII Army Veteran and received the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Croix de Guerre with Palm and Fourragere #1286 Pres of French Prov Government 45.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, Gardner.
He was also a member of the VFW, Post 905 of Gardner and the AARP.
Edmond enjoyed working in his yard, walking, reading and watching television. He liked to spend time watching and feeding birds. He enjoyed family outings, and traveling to Maine and Florida. He and his wife were two of the original members of "Two Hearts As One" square dancing club. Edmonds greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren. He had a keen memory and could recall all the details of his life, which he enjoyed sharing with his family and friends.
He leaves his wife of 61 years, Geraldine M. (Lefebvre) Richard of Gardner; one son, Bruce J. Richard and his wife Ann of Gardner; one daughter, Susan M. Hermanson and her husband Michael of Gardner; three grandchildren, Brandi Richard, Matthew Hermanson and Scott Hermanson all of Gardner; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one brother, Leo Richard and by one sister, Irene LeBlanc.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, March 14th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 GlenAllen Street, Winchendon.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, March 14th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.
