E. Donald Kartunen, 86, of 89 Racette Avenue, Gardner died Tuesday, June 18, 2013 in his residence surrounded by family, following a long illness.
Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 1, 1926, he was the son of the late Eli and Elma (Yokela) Kartunen.
Donald was a tool and product engineer employed by Wain-Roy, Inc. of Hubbardston for 15 years, retiring in 1988. He was previously employed by Ingersoll-Rand Company of Nashua, NH, Independent Lock Company of Fitchburg and Harrington and Richardson Inc. of Gardner.
Donald was a 1944 graduate of Gardner High School, Gardner, where he was a member of the baseball team and a starting end for the football team. He attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.
Donald was a United States WWII Navy Veteran and served on the NTC, Sampson, NY, USS Minneapolis (CA 36) and USS Preble (DM20). He received the WWII Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal.
He was a member of the VFW Ovila Cast, Post 905 of Gardner, American Legion Post 129 of Gardner, Chair City Chapter of AARP, Gardner Golden Agers and the Central Mass Postcard Club.
He enjoyed reading, traveling and antique shows. He was well known in the flea market circuits. Donald most enjoyed spending time with his family.
Donald was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, M. Dorothy (Sund) Kartunen who died July 26, 2007.
He leaves one son, John W. Kartunen and his wife Carole of Millbrae, CA; one brother, William Carlson and his wife Charlene of Seattle, WA; three grandchildren, Kristen, David and Andrew Kartunen; two great-grandchildren, Jones and Eli Kartunen; two nieces, one nephew and several cousins. He was predeceased by one brother, Larry Kartunen, who died in 1970, during the Vietnam Era.
A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, June 25th at 2:00 p.m. in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 GlenAllen Street, Winchendon.
