Dr. Ernest L. Allen, 92, of 47 Lake Street, Gardner, formerly of Nashua, NH for 40 years, died Sunday, June 26th in his residence surrounded by family, following a long illness.
Born in Woodland, Maine on November 15, 1923, he was the son of the late Henri and Virginie (Cormier) Allain.
He was a 1941 graduate of Gardner High School, and attended the University of Illinois, Midwestern School of Optics and received his Doctorate in Optometry from Illinois College of Optometry. He, along with his wife who is also an Optometrist, practiced optometry initially in South Dakota and for the following 40 years in Nashua, NH. He was a member of the Alumni Association of Illinois College of Optometry, New Hampshire Optometric Association, South Dakota Optometric Association and the International Hearing Society. In the year 2000, Dr. Allen was honored by the American Optometric Association for 50 years of loyal and faithful service to the profession of Optometry.
Dr. Allen was a WWII Veteran and served in the US Army as a medical technician with the 273rd Medical Detachment and participated in the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe campaigns. He received the WWII Victory Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Service Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the American Campaign Medal.
He was a member of Annunciation Parish/Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church of Gardner, VFW Ovila Case, Post 905 of Gardner, American Legion Post 129 of Gardner, Acadian Social Club of Gardner, American Accordionists' Association and American Radio Relay League, Inc. His call sign was WAIDPZ. Dr. Allen was a commercially rated pilot, and a member of the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association.
He leaves his wife of 66 years, Marilyn L. (Krall) Allen, of Gardner; two sons, James J. Allen and his wife Ruth of Lake City, Florida and Steve M. Allen of Woodsville, NH; one brother, Paul Allain and his wife Sandi of Gardner; five sisters, Alice Thomaidis and her husband George of Leominster, Doris Smith of Chehalis, WA, Rachel McPherson and her husband Forrest of Gardner, Theresa Morin of Gardner, and Jeannette Stefancik of Orange; one grandson, Michael H. Allen of Lyndeborough, NH; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Dr. Allen was predeceased by three sisters, Isabelle; Stella and Cecile; and by two brothers, Henry and Sylvio Allain.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, June 30th from the Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols Street, Gardner with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in Annunciation Parish/Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols Street, Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, June 30th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.
